An Enrolled Agent (EA) is an individual designation provided by the Internal Revenue Service (IRS). It is one of the few designations that signify a concentration of competency in the field of taxation. Unlike CPAs, who may or may not provide tax services, Enrolled Agents specialize in taxation. Often called the “best kept secret in accounting,” Enrolled Agents provide an important and marketable service to the public, government and accounting community.
EAs are licensed by the federal government to represent taxpayers before the Internal Revenue Service and assist with tax planning and the preparation of tax returns. Because EA’s specialize in taxes and tax planning, they’re known as The Tax Professionals. Their federal designation gives them access and insight with federal and state agencies no matter where the EA practices and no matter where the taxpayer lives.
